The European Tour was established by the British-based Professional Golfers’ Association and responsibility was transferred to an independent PGA Tour organisation in 1984.

The European-based events on the European Tour are nearly all played in Western Europe and the most lucrative of them take place in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, France and Spain. However, in recent years, an increasing number of European Tour events have been held in other parts of the world, such as Asia, Australia and South Africa.

As of 2007 the chairman of the PGA European Tour board is Neil Coles and the chairman of the tournament committee is Thomas Bjørn.

The PGA European Tour also conducts the Ryder Cup Matches in cooperation with the PGA of America.

Heading the career money list for the European Tour is Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie, closely followed by South African Ernie Els, whose compatriot Retief Goosen is in third ahead of Ireland’s Padraig Harrington and Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke.

European Tour betting, for those who fancy the odd wager, is a great way of getting involved in the sport. There are some players who have been regular performers on the European Tour in recent years, and who warrant closer inspection during the 2008 BMW International Open.

These include the top four all-time money-earners on the tour: Montgomerie, Els, Goosen and Harrington. Swedes Niclas Fasth and Henrik Stenson are consistent top 10 finishers in European Tour events, as are Englishmen Luke Donald and David Howell, and Spain’s Angel Cabrera.
