The tournament has been an annual stop on the Tour ever since.

The inaugural BMW International Open in 1989 was won by David Feherty, while last year’s tournament saw Niclas Fasth walk off with the €1 979 950 first prize.

The 2008 edition of the BMW International Open marks the tournament’s 20th anniversary – a significant milestone in the history of this world-renowned event. This year’s tournament will follow on from a 2007 event that witnessed the introduction of several major changes.

Over the course of BMW International Open history has traditionally been played later in the summer, was moved forward in the PGA European Tour schedule for the 2007 edition and will retain this earlier slot in 2008. In 2008, the dates for the tournament have been set for June 19 to 22.

Commenting on the new dates before the 2007 edition of the BMW International Open, Ludwig Willisch, Tournament President of the BMW International Open and Director of Region Germany, BMW Group, said: “Considering the new FedEx Cup playoff series in the USA and taking other golf events in Asia – as well as on the European and the US PGA Tour – into account, we decided to change the schedule. Together with the PGA European Tour, we managed to find an ideal solution for the BMW International Open in June.”

There were other changes to this prestigious PGA-sanctioned event that were actioned in 2007. These included the toughening up of the Golf Club Munich Eichenried course, in the form of the introduction of extremely thick rough throughout the course and extra hazards added to holes 11, 16 and 18.
